Amsterdam is one
of Europe's
flourishing hotspots. Its
beautiful architecture,
attention-grabbing tourist
sites, thriving nightlife and
world-famous museums are a huge
drawing card for visitors around
the globe. Although the citys
layout can be a bit confusing at
first, the public transportation
is well organized, making it
easy to get around and see the
famous sites. It is possible to
get around by foot though and
since Amsterdam is smaller than
most European cities and the
locals have a very laid back
attitude, it doesnt take long to
feel at ease.
Some of the
beautiful sites to explore are
the canals. Quite charming
during the day, they come alive
at night when the canal houses
and bridges are beautifully
illuminated. Amsterdam is also
known for its windmills. There
are eight in the heart of the
city but only two can be
visited. Grab a cup of coffee at
one of Europes first coffee
houses or take in a concert at
the concert hall, which is
housed in Europes first stock
exchange.
Explore a few
museums. The Museum of the
Resistance provides educational
and historical information about
the Holocaust. You could also
visit the home where Anne Frank
and her family hid during World
War II. The Van Gogh Museum has
a large collection of his work
according to the different
periods in his life. Prefer
Rembrandt? You could tour the
home where this famous artist
lived for over twenty years.
This house has been fully
restored and displays over 250
of his etchings as well as a few
paintings from his pupils. The
Rijksmuseum is a State Museum
and is by far the largest museum
in the Netherlands.
Prefer a little
shopping? Amsterdam's most
famous day market is the Albert
Cuyp. Its retained its old charm
and is bustling with activity.
The pulse of the city can be
felt at Dam Square. This area is
filled with markets as well as
many street performers. Its also
home to the Royal Palace, the
War Memorial and the Nieuwe Kerk,
which means new church. Dam
Square is also home to many
celebrations and street parties.
And then theres the Red Light
District. This world-famous
street is known for the hottest
clubs and shall we say window
dressings Amsterdam has to
offer. And although it has a bit
of a seedy reputation, its also
home to world-class dining and
very cool coffee shops. So
whether you prefer the
nightlife, museums or strolling
through the streets, Amsterdam
is a very unique city that
offers something for everyone.
